Shared vs Cloud vs VPS: Which Hostinger Product Do You Actually Need?

The three Hostinger hosting architectures in plain English — what managed means in each, what control you trade away, and which plans fit which real-world scenario.

Three products, three different trade-offs

Hostinger sells three hosting architectures, and the names do not make the differences obvious. “Cloud hosting” sounds like it should be more advanced than a VPS. It is not — it is a different trade-off.

The clean way to think about it is on one axis: how much do you manage?

  • Shared (web) hosting — Hostinger manages everything. You manage your website.
  • Cloud hosting — Hostinger manages everything, and you get a bigger resource allocation. Still you manage only your website.
  • VPS — Hostinger provides the machine and the network. You manage everything above that.

Moving right buys you capability and costs you convenience. Here is what that means in practice, plan by plan.

Shared hosting, in plain English

Shared hosting puts many customers on one physical server and divides the CPU, RAM and disk between them. Your site gets a slice, and the slice is enforced.

On Hostinger, that slice is spelled out precisely:

  • Premium: 1 CPU core, 2 GB RAM, 20 GB SSD, 40 PHP workers, 400,000 inodes, 10 databases
  • Unlimited: 2 cores, 3 GB RAM, 50 GB NVMe, 60 PHP workers, 600,000 inodes, 150 databases

The number that matters most is PHP workers, because that is your concurrency budget. When all workers are busy, new requests wait in a queue. That is what “the site got slow at 3pm” actually means, and it will never show up in an uptime report.

What managed gets you: hPanel, one-click WordPress installation, automatic SSL, a CDN, email mailboxes, free migration, and 24/7 chat support that will fix things for you.

What you give up: any ability to change the server. You cannot install custom software, tune the web server, or set your own PHP configuration beyond what the panel exposes. And you share fate with other accounts on the node.

Who it fits: first websites, blogs, portfolios, brochure sites, small business sites, anything with modest traffic and no unusual server requirements. Premium is the typical entry point.

Cloud hosting, in plain English

Hostinger’s cloud plans look and feel almost identical to shared hosting. Same hPanel, same one-click installers, same managed experience. What changes is the size of the slice:

Cloud Startup is roughly four times the resources of Premium. Hostinger markets the range as “4x more speed and 20x more resources than traditional web hosting”, and the resource claim is directionally fair. The speed claim depends entirely on whether your site is cached — a cached Premium site can beat an uncached Cloud Startup site.

One detail worth knowing: cloud plans are marketed as having unlimited websites, but Hostinger’s own parameters table lists a technical cap of 100 websites on Cloud Startup. The resource limits are the real ceiling in any case.

What managed gets you: everything shared hosting gets you, plus a dedicated IP, unlimited free SSL, daily and on-demand backups, and a much larger resource pool.

What you give up: still no server control. Cloud hosting is not a lighter VPS; it is a bigger shared plan.

Who it fits: light WooCommerce stores, sites with real concurrency, growing businesses that want more headroom without hiring a sysadmin. Cloud Startup is the first rung of this ladder.

VPS, in plain English

A VPS is a virtual machine with its own allocated CPU, RAM and disk. You get root access. You install what you want, configure what you want, and are responsible for all of it.

What you get: isolation. Nobody else’s traffic spike affects your CPU. You can run Node.js, Docker, a custom application server, multiple client sites with proper separation, or a database tuned to your workload.

What you give up: all the convenience. There is no hPanel for the server. There is no one-click WordPress button. There is no chat agent who will fix your nginx config. You also inherit a real risk: an unpatched, untuned VPS running a default stack can easily be slower and less secure than a well-configured shared plan.

Who it fits: developers, agencies, people running non-PHP applications, anyone who has outgrown the shared model and is willing to own the consequences. KVM 2 is the configuration most people land on.

Read the middle rows together and the trade-off is clear. Cloud Startup gives you twice the CPU of KVM 2 and a fully managed experience, at a higher renewal price and with no root access. KVM 2 gives you twice the RAM, root access and a lower renewal price, in exchange for you doing the work.

Rule of thumb: if you have to ask whether you want a VPS, you do not want a VPS. The managed tiers exist precisely so that you do not have to make that call. Revisit it when you hit a wall that resources cannot fix — when you need software the shared stack will not run.

Scenarios, mapped to plans

A personal blog publishing twice a month. Premium. One core is plenty for a cached blog, and the free domain and email bundle make it the cheapest sensible start. Expect it to handle roughly 20,000–30,000 monthly pageviews on a well-cached WordPress setup.

A service business site with a contact form. Unlimited. The reason is not traffic, it is daily backups and a dedicated IP. One dollar a month over Premium for peace of mind on a site that generates revenue.

A WooCommerce store doing 100 orders a month. Cloud Startup. Four cores and 100 PHP workers handle cart and checkout concurrency far better than Unlimited’s two cores, and the 6 GB database limit gives you room. Configure SMTP for transactional email — server-based sending is capped at 10 emails per minute and 100 per day.

An agency hosting 20 client sites. A VPS, not shared hosting. You need isolation between clients and the ability to run different PHP versions and configurations per site. KVM 4 with 4 vCPU cores and 16 GB RAM is the starting point; KVM 8 for larger portfolios. Hostinger also sells Agency hosting with 6–10 cores and 100–300 websites if you would rather stay managed.

A Node.js API plus a small front end. Unlimited or Cloud Startup — Node.js hosting is available from Unlimited up, with 5 sites on Unlimited and 10 on Cloud Startup. Premium does not support Node.js at all. For anything more demanding than a small API, a VPS is the honest answer.

A site that keeps hitting 503 errors at peak. You have outgrown the tier, not the host. Move up one step: Premium to Unlimited, Unlimited to Cloud Startup. If the next step up still is not enough, the problem is the shared model, and a VPS is the fix.

A developer who wants to run Docker. VPS, without question. No shared or cloud plan will let you do that.

How to choose without overthinking it

  1. Can you manage a Linux server? No → stay on web or cloud hosting.
  2. Is your site mostly cached content? Yes → Premium is likely enough.
  3. Does it take orders or hold customer data? Yes → Unlimited at minimum, Cloud Startup if it is a real store.
  4. Do you need software the shared stack will not run? Yes → VPS.
  5. Do you want more RAM per dollar than the managed tiers offer? Yes → VPS, if you accept the responsibility.
